There several reason to explain that. First one is cultural factor like "Collectivism". There is a phrase"“In Japan, being different is often equated with being wrong.”

Third one is because of work style. In Japan, life time employment is based, so it makes difficult to quit job or re-recruited. It means it is more difficult to get job if you once drop out than other nations.

Psychologist Perspective
Vadim
Hello students!
I'm a psychologist.
My Name is Brian. I am 60 years old. I live alone.
Tackling the problem of Japanese hikikomori issue.
I usually research specific feature of the family that includes hikikomori as a psychologist.
My friends Satou, Sakano, Ishikawa, Sakai, and I developed the HBCL(Hikikomori Behavior Check List).
I indicate the possible behavior to consider people as a hikikomori.
1. Aggressive behavior
2. Social anxiety
3. Threatening behavior
4. Family avoidance behavior
5. Depression
6. Lack of activities of daily living
7. Inexplicable maladaptive behavior (Exhibited responses)
8. Nonparticipation in society
9. Decreased activity
10. Irregular life patterns
These 10 behavioral traits are strongly related to psychological characteristic of people who are Hikikomori.
The reason why Hikikomori is considered as Japanese particular matter is related to the Japanese collective tendencies. Historically, Japanese people have a sense of unity as a nation. Most of Hikikomori had pressure of becoming the part of group.
Considered these factors, I suggested the most effective support will be a family support.
I believe my future research save the Hikikomori people.

返信削除The first and most interesting point I would like to make is that there is a very strong relationship between sunlight and Hikikkomori. They say that sunlight makes people happy because it produces the happy hormones serotonin and vitamin D. I strongly agree with this opinion. I myself often find that if I stay at home all the time and am not exposed to sunlight, my mood gradually drops and I feel depressed. I have found that exposure to sunlight is very important for human beings.I also try to get out of the house as much as possible at least once a day, even on days when I don't have plans!(Chiharu)
This clearly explains the seriousness of hikikomori, showing it is not just a problem for individuals but for families and society. It’s surprising that most hikikomori are in their 40s, making it harder for them to rejoin work or social life. I thought most of the hikikomori are in junior high and high school. The “80-50 problem” highlights how aging parents struggle to support their adult children. I didn’t realize hikikomori existed outside Japan, so it’s interesting to learn it happens in other countries too, though the details may be different. It made me realize that more support and understanding for hikikomori, both in mental health and social reintegration, is very important.
返信削除Thank you for your clear and concise explanation of hikikomori. I think it’s great that you also mentioned the global presence of hikikomori, like in Korea and Italy. This shows that it’s not just a cultural issue limited to Japan, but a broader, international phenomenon that deserves more global attention. You mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic increased the number of hikikomori—this is a very important and relevant point. I’d suggest further exploring how lockdowns, social distancing, and remote learning influenced youth mental health and their ability to socialize. Maybe you could interview students, survey teachers, or review academic papers on this topic? Understanding this connection better could help NGOs create more effective and preventive mental health support systems that could be implemented in schools and communities after future pandemics or social disruptions.
