1 Overall

Speaking of my survey, we would you like to notice that most of respondents was teenager. So, it maybe biased by students opinions. However, almost all respondents seemed honest judging from their answers. Most of their answers include their own perspective based on their experiences.

2 Respondent states

As we mentioned before, most of respondents are teenager, except 30% who are over 20. Also, we got answers from a parent and from two part-timers while there are large number of students.

3Result of basic questions

First of all, we asked if they have ever felt anxiety in their school life. As a result, 70% of them have experience of feeling anxiety. We didn't expect that so many student had felt it. In addition, we asked if they had term when they had been isolated from society. Also, unexpected that half of respondent answered 'yes'. Regarding of answer of the word "Hikikomori", as we expected, most people knew the word "Hikikomori".

4 Deeper questions

We asked when they felt a pressure in their school life. A large number of them answered when they studied for exam or they had to communicate with others, they often felt a pressure. Also, expectation from parents may be possible reasons to feel pressure. Next I asked about possible reasons to become Hikikomori from options below

Forms response chart. Question title: Which reason do you think is the most possible one to become Hikikomori?. Number of responses: 23 responses.

We didn't expect that so many people thought that SNS addiction is main factor to be Hikikomori.

We should have addicted the Video game addiction.

Then, we asked them "When your friend become a Hikikomori, what will you do? "

We found that Japanese people tend to suggest a non-aggressive way like "Leave him alone" or "I do nothing" , "just be kind to them" while people who had lived oversees try aggressive effort.
At last, I ask respondent to think about what NPO can do to support them. We thought that the most efficient way is to conduct counseling, or mental caring to encourage Hikikomori people.

5 Conclusion

As a result of survey, we got the several perspective from some students. It was so helpful for us to make concrete solution to make recovering Hikikomori people. We decided to plan a program of communication seminar and face-on-face counseling and telephone counseling!

  1. I was really surprised to know that many people felt anxiety among school life. I have never heard about feeling anxious among school life from people near me, so I thought that maybe those people can't tell others about their feelings and ends up being a Hikikomori. I heard that some people who are Hikikomori acted normal even the moment before they became Hikikomori, so I guess those who can't tell that they are feeling socially isolated are the ones who might become Hikikomori with a small trigger. There was a result that says Hikikomori can be caused from mental illness too. I really agree with this result but I thought that there may be some situations like you already were addicted to SNS and the symptoms of mental illness made you socially isolated.

  2. The most surprising point of this article to me was that more than half of the students answered that they had experienced social isolation: I was really surprised because I myself had never felt isolated from society, even though I had felt lonely. I would like to know how it is like to be isolated from society.
In addition, I was right in my destination that approximately 70% of the students had experienced anxiety in their student life. In the course of our school life, we are worried about a lot of things, like friendships and romantic relationships and our future.(Chiharu)

  3. Thank you for sharing your survey results — it was really insightful to see how many respondents had experienced anxiety and even social withdrawal. I was surprised, like you, that many people considered SNS addiction to be a major cause of becoming hikikomori. It might be interesting to look more into the role of digital spaces —not only as causes but also possibly as safe zones for those people. Maybe online platforms can also be used for recovery programs. Have you thought about whether online counseling or peer support communities might work better for some hikikomori people rather than face-to-face methods?
